Delicious warming and cooling soups for winter and summer

Is a bowl of soup really a good winter meal? It can be yes and no. Soups may also be served cold making it a good summer meal as well. Have you heard about that earlier? Yes, soups are healthy liquid meals; they not only sate hunger in winters but also sate hunger in summer as you can have chilled soups too. A healthy composition of selected foods can boost the flavor, nutrition, and filling power of your soup.

Soups are nutritious foods that provide a good mix of minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants found in plants which destroy toxins in the body.

1 Which types of soup should be avoided?

Canned or packet soups should be avoided as they contain higher amounts of salts and additives. Check the labels if you are on a low salt diet. Avoid very spicy soups as they may cause inflammation and increase acid levels in the body. If you are on a low fat diet, avoid creamy soups as they contain very high levels of fat.

  • 5-6 soaked almonds
  • A small bunch of spinach
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 3 cups water or vegetable stock

How to prepare:

  • Add water in a pot over low heat.
  • Blend fresh spinach and puree it. Sieve and add into the pot of water.
  • Add finely chopped onion and garlic.
  • Put the cinnamon stick in the pot while cooking so that the soup absorbs all the flavor of the stick.
  • Chop the soaked almonds into eatable bites and put it into the simmering soup.
  • It hardly takes 10 minutes to cook this soup. Serve it green, fresh, and hot. You can season it with salt and pepper.

How to prepare:

Blend all the ingredients except the stock. Blend them coarsely to make a nutty consistency. Boil the stock and add in the blended mixture. The hot, steamy, healthy soup is ready.

  • ½ tbsp olive oil or sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 -3 handful chickpeas (soaked overnight and blended )
  • 2-3 tbsp tahini (sesame seed paste)
  • 2 cups vegetable stock
  • 1 fresh lemon juice

How to prepare:

  • Sauté cumin seeds in olive oil.
  • Add garlic and onion and cook until soft.
  • Add chickpea, tahini, and stock. Stir well and bring to a boil.
  • Remove the soup from heat and stir in the lemon juice.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

Gingery carrot soup


  • 1tbsp oil
  • 1 onion small
  • 1 small piece sliced ginger
  • 6 medium-sized carrots, sliced
  • 3-4 cups vegetable stock
  • 1 lime (juice extracted)
  • 1/2 cup fat-free yogurt

How to prepare:

  • Heat the oil in a pot over medium flame. Add onions and sauté until soft. Add ginger and garlic, sauté until fragrant.
  • Raise the flame, add carrots then pour the stock. Bring the stock to simmer. After the first simmer, reduce the flame to medium heat and let it simmer until the carrots are cooked and tender. This would take 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove the soup and let it cool. When it cools down, puree the soup in a blender until soft and smooth. Put it in a bowl with lid and refrigerate it for about 2 hours.
  • Before serving, stir in lime juice and yogurt. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.

5 Sweet potato and yellow split peas soup


  • 4 cups water or vegetable stock
  • 1 sweet potato peeled and chopped into small pieces
  • 1 cup dried yellow split peas
  • 1 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds
  • 1 small onion
  • ½ tbsp freshly grated ginger
  • ¼ tbsp thyme and cumin powder (freshly roasted and powdered)

How to prepare:

  • Place a saucepan over medium flame and fill it with a cup of water. Add onions and cook till translucent. Add ginger and allow it to cook.
  • Increase the flame and add the remaining water, sweet potatoes, and peas. Bring it to a boil. After the first boil, lower the flame and allow it to cook slowly. Cover it with a lid.
  • After cooking for 30-40 minutes, let it cool down. Cook it more if required. Once the soup cools down blend it into puree until smooth. Garnish it with pumpkin seeds, roasted thymes, and cumin. Season it with salt and pepper.
